National Flag Hoisting Day today.

Historic ‘National Flag Hoisting Day’ is observed on Tuesday, March 2. On this day in 1971, the then Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) president ASM Abdur Rab hoisted the green background with a red circle symbolizing the flag of the dream of Independent Bengal at historic Bot Tola of Dhaka University at a student assembly.

Another student leader Shajahan Siraj hoisted the National Flag through the National Anthem in the presence of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on March 3 the next day.

On March 23, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman first hoisted the National Flag at his residence in Dhanmondi.

During the Liberation War, on April 17, the first National Anthem was played at Amrakanan, presently Mujibnagar and on April 18, the National Flag of Bangladesh was first hoisted overseas i.e. Bangladesh Mission in Kolkata, India.

The Red-Green National Flag with a Golden Map is drawn in the middle of the red disc on the green field. Later the map was removed from the Bangladesh flag on January 12, 1972. The national flag of Bangladesh was adopted nationally on January 17, 1972.

The people responded to the March 2 strikes called by then DUCSU leaders against the exploitation, wrongdoing, oppression, and injustice of Pakistani rulers. In fact, through the hoisting of the flag on that day, the Bengali students, people were inspired by the freedom struggle and started the path of attaining independence.
